THE LAST FIREBASE -Traveling Military Museum
"The Ultimate Hands On Experience"

from www.thelastfirebase.us
Humble beginnings
“THE WALL” was built to honor and memorialize those who served, but there are millions
who never travel far from their home let alone to Washington, D.C. Thus came the idea of
“The Moving Wall”, a replica that would travel to hometowns all over and allow you to
touch and make tracing of the names placed there just as they do on the original WALL.

But there is more to war than lists of names on monuments. There are the trappings of
war. Equipment, weapons, and the remains of all that war is and has left behind. Most of
this ends up in private collections and museums or buried in a dump never to be seen
again. When was the last time you went to a museum or even an antique shop or flea
market and heard “don’t touch” or “ you break it you buy it”? It happens somewhere
every day.

Well a veteran who is from generations of collectors had a dream. Why couldn’t he take
his small collection out and display it in public places too, but with a twist to not just
display, rather let the public pick it up, feel it, touch it, remember and fantasize with it?
And this is how “The Last Firebase Traveling Military Museum” was conceived. A handful
of artifacts on a table at a gun show or on a tarp at a swap meet, not for sale but to look
at and interact with has over a few years grown to a twenty plus table display of between
eight and ten thousand pounds of everything from guns and grenades to MRE's and
clothing. As you enter the display you are greeted by someone in fatigues and invited to
pick up and examine most everything there. Stop on your way out and view photo
memories from the past along with diaries, short video's, and other documents available
on our newest addition, a laptop computer.

As you walk thru you can put on a backpack, a helmet, hold a rifle and imagine the enemy
is just around the corner while you listen to recording of Armed Forces Radio, music from
the 60's or brief narratives. Movies create fantasies, but so many have or will never
experienced reality. The bulk of a full backpack or the weight of a radio so necessary for
communication becomes quite real when you pick it up and put it on. And what about the
interaction between the veteran that comes with his children and grandchildren, many of
whom know only what the media has shown them about the military? Watching and
listening to them reminisce about their experiences is quite educational if not
entertaining. Most recently this museum has been seen in conjunction with “Moving Wall”
events in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee and hopes to expand the range of travel
to other states in the coming year.

Hank Kaminski of Dryden, MI is the owner of “The Last Firebase Museum” and a Life
Member of both VVA (no post affiliation at this time), and VFW Post 2492, Imlay City, MI.

JUST A REMINDER...Run For The Border Ride

If you happen to be coming up to our Rally, why not
come up on Thursday, July 9th and help raise some
money for a great cause, and ride with some damn good
bikers!

The American Legion Riders from Post #3 in Sault Ste.
Marie started this ride as a way to donate funds to the
Michigan Heroes to Hometowns program. This program
helps injured service men and women who are returning
home from the Middle East with life altering injuries.

If you want to participate just check out the link to the
right and it will detail everything you need to know.
